The Vermont Biodiesel Project
The Vermont Biodiesel Project is the first phase of the Vermont Biofuels Initiative, a public/private collaboration established to help accelerate growth of the emerging biofuels industry in Vermont. The larger initiative supports three related components:
- Development of the biofuels industry network.
- Market conditioning through biofuels education, incentive programs and a commercial-scale pilot project.
- Biodiesel capacity and infrastructure development.

Vermont is well suited to biodiesel production and usage with a healthy agricultural base, local economies and strong environmental values. Since Vermonters consume more than 300 million gallons of diesel fuel annually, there is significant market potential for supporting a local biofuels industry. To date, the Northeastern U.S. has lagged in the development of biodiesel markets and biodiesel production.
The Vermont Biodiesel Project is addressing this gap by building awareness and markets among Vermont institutional users about biodiesel benefits, while helping emerging in-state fuel producers, create a demand for their products.
The initiative will benefit Vermont, its citizens, and environment by:
- Establishing the state as a regional leader in the production and use of renewable, low-emission biofuels
- Creating jobs in an expanding industry
- Improving air quality in Vermont and the Northeast
- Reducing emissions that contribute to global warming and acid rain
- Providing Vermont's family farms with new income streams from seed oil crops and by-products
- Potentially contributing to fuel price stability in New England by making a regionally produced fuel available
- Increasing Vermont's energy security by diversifying fuel options for Vermonters.
The Vermont Biodiesel Project focuses on the second component of the Vermont Biofuels Initiative's three-point approach: That is, market development through biofuels education, incentive programs and a commercial-scale pilot project.
